Refugee Resettlement Service at United Church

On August 20, 2009, we welcomed a new Karen family from Burma who had been living in a Thai refugee camp for several years. This is one of the two families that UCCH sponsored when we began our refugee involvement in 2007. Subsequently, we have sponsored five additional families and two individuals, with plans to sponsor more in the fall of 2012. The intensive initial involvement of our church to meet immediate needs of the new family does not end in the short term. Earlier arrivals continue to be part of our church family. We continue supporting our families with short term needs, mentoring them to navigate the formal immigration/citizenship process, teaching them English, and eventually becoming their friends. Frequent home visits by our congregants insure that our sponsored families become well integrated in our communities.
