The theme of this year's musical, "In The Image," is creation and the environment: we are created in the image of God the Creator, and therefore we are creators ourselves. Fun characters such as The Catalyst, The Literalist, Artsy and Craftsy...not to mention Muck 1 and Muck 2...explore ways that we can creatively care for God's creation. It's a great script full of fun songs and dances, and even includes a parade! The musical will also be presented at the 8:45 worship service Sunday, May 6.
The fourth annual Youth Choir Benefit Concert features Youth Choirs from: United Church of Chapel Hill, University Presbyterian Church, University United Methodist Church, and Binkley Baptist Church. The concert will feature choral selections performed by each of the Youth Choirs, six anthems performed by all the choirs together and a speaker from the organization that will benefit from the proceeds of the concert. Four years ago singers and directors from UPC, UUMC and UCCH brainstormed together and came up with what has become an annual Youth Choir Benefit Concert and last year expanded to include Binkley Baptist Church's Youth Choir. Representatives from each choir get together in the fall and choose a local nonprofit to benefit from the proceeds of the donations collected at the concert. This year's benefit concert proceeds will go to support a local mental health initiative, Josh's Hope Foundation, based in Hillsborough, NC. Over the past three years funds collected from the Benefit Concert have gone to support: TABLE, the Sophie Foundation, and the Carrboro Refugee Support Center. Planning of the concert offers youth a chance to get to know each other, sing together, and research and support local issues that they feel are important to the youth and young adults in our community.
Every day, millions of people in the US and around the world feed and support their families in part because of lifesaving programs funded by our government. We are making progress toward the end of hunger, but we live in challenging times. Our gains are increasingly vulnerable due to the actions and inactions of governing officials. We will write letters pushing our legislators to make funding decisions that can jump start and accelerate progress against hunger. Writing a personal letter is simple and should take only a few minutes.
Anitra Grove, Director for Children’s Ministry will join us as we examine the intersections of our Racial Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Covenant with our ministry to the youngest among us. How do we talk with children about race in ways that foster healthy racial identities? How are we affirming the importance of diversity and multiculturalism? How do we help our children understand the past and present realities of racism in such a way that they can learn to tell the truth about race and see themselves as advocates for fairness and justice?
Reverend Cameron Barr will join with SCOR to discuss the future of our church’s multicultural anti-racism ministry. We’ll talk about the 2015 SCOR Report & Recommendations; the Racial Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Covenant; and preview the denomination’s new Sacred Conversations To End Racism initiative (SC2ER). All are welcome to join in this sacred conversation. CLICK HERE to read the 2015 SCOR Report.
