The focus and goals of these programs is to improve the reading, writing, and spelling abilities of children in our community. The Board of Justice, Outreach and Service has selected three programs to support:
The Triangle Literacy Council provides books that are age, and gender appropriate and are given to the children at the Habitat dedication of their new home. Each child receives 10 books. Studies show that children who have their own books are more likely to improve their reading skills especially during the summer months when schools are not in session.
UCCH members and friends have the chance to volunteer their time as readers to students in K, 1st , and 2nd grade in the public school system. Readers are asked to dedicate 1 hour of time once or twice a week throughout the school year. A 2 hour training is required before getting assigned to a school.
