About the United Church Youth Group
Our gatherings range from 8-20 youth, mostly 6th-10th graders from in and around the Triangle. Our group actively includes, welcomes, and affirms LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse, immigrant, and BIPOC youth. Our activities range from high-energy games and community service to reflection activities and art projects. We are grounded in progressive, justice-oriented values and Christian faith. Youth group meets from 5:30-7:30 PM on Sundays with occasional activities at other times.
Role Description
UCCH is seeking a kind, energetic, and creative undergraduate or graduate student to support the social, emotional, and spiritual growth of middle and high school students at United Church of Chapel Hill. The intern helps prepare and lead youth group activities each week alongside the Youth Minister (Jackson Ringley).
Responsibilities
- Assist in planning and leading weekly youth group during the Fall and Spring semesters.
- Spend time building relationships, playing games, and leading reflection with the youth.
- Attend and help facilitate Youth Sunday at UCCH (once per semester).
- Meet weekly with the Youth Minister.
- Additional responsibilities in consultation with the Youth Minister (and as desired by the intern), which may include occasional leadership in worship, Sunday School, or mission projects.
Qualifications
- A willingness to humbly learn, serve, and have fun!
- Ability to lead and facilitate small group activities.
- Experience and/or interest in working with youth, especially grades 6-8.
- Familiarity with progressive Christian values and social justice ministries.
- STRONG BONUS: Spanish-language skills.
- BONUS: experience in camp or conference ministry.
Compensation and Time
The intern is compensated at a rate of $20/hr with an anticipated 5 hrs/week, which includes youth group (~2.5 hrs) and planning (~2.5hrs). Hours can be adjusted for overnight trips, longer service projects, etc. This position runs from September 8 through December 13 in the Fall semester and from January 6 through May 16 in the Spring.
