Bread for the World: Advocacy Letter Writing

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

Every day, millions of people in the US and around the world feed and support their families in part because of lifesaving programs funded by our government. We are making progress toward the end of hunger, but we live in challenging times. Our gains are increasingly vulnerable due to the actions and inactions of governing officials. We will write letters pushing our legislators to make funding decisions that can jump start and accelerate progress against hunger. Writing a personal letter is simple and should take only a few minutes.

“The Cross and the Lynching Tree” A Book Study w/ Pastor Cameron

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

Pilgrimage of Truth and Justice Registration is now open for our church-wide pilgrimage to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, on August 3-5. CLICK HERE for more information. The purpose of this journey is to acknowledge the living legacy of white supremacy in our country, learn the history of white racial violence in our state from Reconstruction to Jim Crow, and confess our participation in the systems and structures of racial oppression. The pilgrimage is centered on a visit to the recently opened memorial to victims of lynching. Our preparations will involve Wednesday evening study throughout the summer. Participants will be asked to commit to reading two books, In June: The Cross and the Lynching Tree by the black liberation theologian James Cone, and In July: Just Mercy, the memoir of Bryan Stevenson, the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. We will also familiarize ourselves with EJI reports on racial violence and explore the history of lynching in our own community. The Cross and the Lynching Tree is now available on the table outside the Family Parlor for $23. Alternative Gift Market

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

We are now accepting table registration for non-profit vendors and artists to participate in this year's Alternative Gift Market (AGM). This year's our market mission is supporting Church World Service's Safe School Zones in East Kenya. This is the 3rd year of supporting this project. When schools don’t have clean water or safe structures, or when hunger drowns out a teacher’s lesson, learning is harder than it should be. Our congregation through the AGM has helped to create safe, welcoming learning spaces for kids in East Africa. When you provide children with a safe place for them to learn, they stay in school longer, giving them a great start on life. This year’s market hours - mark your calendars now! Friday, November 16 (5 pm to 9 pm) “Food, Festival, Peacemaking Concert,  and of course, Shopping for a Cause!” Saturday, November 17 (9 am to 3 pm) Please spread the word! COME JOIN US! Please contact Rinnie Orr for more information - (919) 942-3540 or email rorr@unitedchurch.org for more information on the market or the Safe School Zones Project.
