“Earthwalk” at Timberlake Earth Sanctuary

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

Sandy Bisdee will lead United Church families and friends through a retreat-like experience in the quiet and inviting trails of the beautiful Timberlake Earth Sanctuary, 1501 Rock Creek Dairy Rd, Whitsett, NC 27377. This afternoon experience has been designed exclusively for UCCH, so we'll take time to get to know each other and learn about beholding practices as a group. Then we'll try these practices for ourselves, individually and in pairs, noticing the colors, shapes, sounds and movement along the paths we follow. A fresh and renewing calm and peace will slowly wash over us as we become ever more aware of and connected to the life around us. When we return from our “Earthwalk,” we'll do some journaling or sketching about what we've observed-- especially where we saw or felt God's presence. We'll conclude by sharing our observations and receiving God's gifts of grace through an outdoor service of communion. ~Children ages six and older, as well as parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, mentors are welcome to join us for this unique and uplifting afternoon. There is no charge for the retreat but as space is limited participants must sign up in advance. Please contact Susan Steinberg (ssteinberg@unitedchurch.org) to register.

Hope & Climate Change – Eco-Justice Workshop w/ Rev. Dr. Jim Antal

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

Open to all. Sat. June 4, 10 am – 12 pm The scale and urgency of climate change requires our generation to reassess our lives, re-purpose our religious practice and reorient our assets in ways that align with our covenant with God and preserve the Eden into which we were born.  Come to this workshop to be inspired by courageous initiatives already underway, and to consider how you and others might harness your religious communities to meet the greatest moral challenge humanity has ever faced.  As Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said, “Twenty-five years ago people could be excused for not knowing much, or doing much, about climate change. Today we have no excuse....  To serve as custodians of creation is not an empty title; it requires that we act, and with all the urgency this dire situation demands.” Reverend Dr. Jim Antal is the Minister and President of the Massachusetts Conference United Church of Christ since 2006 - a covenant of 360 UCC churches along with over 800 authorized UCC ministers who serve throughout the Commonwealth. After teaching and leading two national peace organizations, Rev. Antal spent twenty years leading vital churches of all sizes in Massachusetts and Ohio.  Rev. Antal brings insight from his mentors – Henri Nouwen and William Sloan Coffin, Jr. – to his work on climate change. He authored and was lead proponent of the UCC’s vote in 2013 to divest from fossil fuel companies - the first denomination to do so.  He has also engaged the spiritual discipline of civil disobedience numerous times, most recently at the White House to stop the Keystone XL pipeline.  In his role as Conference Minister, he is the public voice and strategic leader of the Conference seeking to enlarge the witness of the UCC in Massachusetts. Rev. Antal will be our guest preacher on Sunday, June 5, at both the 8:45 and 11 am services.

In Silent Stillness: A Contemplative Advent Retreat

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

The season of Advent is a season of faithful waiting, a time when we prepare our hearts to receive the gift of Christ's birth. Yet with the many demands on our lives and the noise of consumer messages about Christmas surrounding us, it is often hard to tend to our deepest spiritual longings. To support you as we enter into this poignant moment in the church year, the Board of Adult Education invites UCCH members and friends to pause for quiet prayer on the morning before Advent begins. The forms of contemplative prayer we'll practice and explore together include silence, written reflection based on an Advent version of the Iganatian examen, walking an indoor labyrinth, and praying with images of the Madonna and Holy Family. Don't worry, there will be time to talk, too, and light snacks will be offered. Childcare will be available upon request. There is no fee, but please register by emailing Susan Steinberg - ssteinberg@unitedchurch.org. Led by Susan Steinberg and Nancy Jones

Now Registering: Fall Retreat to Blowing Rock

United Church of Chapel Hill 1321 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, United States

You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. ~Psalm 16:11 Saturday, October 20 (9 am to 12 pm).  This year’s theme: “What Brings You Joy…” This year’s fall retreat to Blowing Rock is falling three weeks before the November elections. In this topsy-turvy political, social world the past few years have brought us much anxiety and unrest. At our retreat this year, we ask participants to share with us “what brings you joy in these unsettling times.” Using the book The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, our Associate Pastor David Mateo, Youth and Young Adult Minister Ian McPherson and Rinnie Orr ask participants to bring their “joy” with them to the mountains. We will gather and share what brings us joy in these unsettling times. About The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships—or, as they would say, because of them—they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama's home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness's eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the face of life's inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our time and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. They share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. (Retreat participants will receive a copy of The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World as part of the retreat costs.) See 2018 Fall Retreat application form for more information and details.
